Ange Postecoglou should hand Lucá Williams-Barnett an opportunity to train with the Tottenham first-team.

It has been a chaotic start to the season for Spurs’ Under-18s.

Stuart Lewis’ side have been involved in some high-scoring matches, including a 5-1, a 6-4 and most recently a thrilling 3-3 draw with Southampton’s Under-18s on Saturday (21 September).

One of their standout players amid all that chaos has been Williams-Barnett, who was on target once again in the draw with the Saints.

Williams-Barnett doubled Spurs’ advantage after Tynan Thompson had put them ahead, with Herbie James putting the North London side back in front late on after Southampton had scored twice to draw level.

A late goal for the hosts denied Spurs the win. However, Williams-Barnett’s performance will have no doubt caught the eye of Postecoglou.

Ange Postecoglou to hand Lucá Williams-Barnett a first-team opportunity at Tottenham?

As well as his goal, Williams-Barnett did miss a penalty against the Saints, which will have no doubt frustrated the 16-year-old.

Nonetheless, that shouldn’t take away from yet another positive display for the forward.

At that age, players are bound to make mistakes and miss penalties, it is normal. However, what isn’t normal is for a 16-year-old to slot so seamlessly into Under-18 football in his first full season at that level.

Yet, that is exactly what Williams-Barnett has done. The youngster has started all five of Spurs’ Under-18 Premier League fixtures this season, scoring five goals and providing two assists.

It is the kind of numbers Mikey Moore was putting up at that level, with the 17-year-old now firmly on the first-team radar at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and a new contract mooted for the forward.

As a result, Postecoglou would be wise to take a closer look at Williams-Barnett. To do that, the Australian could hand the player an opportunity to train with the first team.

With an international break to come in October, and several first-team players likely to be away, that could be the perfect time for Williams-Barnett to spend some time with the first team and demonstrate to Postecoglou what he is capable of.

In other Tottenham news, one player has been blasted despite what he did in the 3-1 home win against Brentford on Saturday 21 September.
