Michael Stewart has slammed James Tavernier after he gifted Dundee a chance in Rangers’ 3-0 win at Ibrox on Saturday.

Philippe Clement’s men got the job done upon their return home on 21 September, overcoming Tony Docherty’s side with a 3-0 success to reach the semi-finals of the Scottish League Cup.

But a glaring chance missed by Mohammed Diomande, followed by some suspect play from Tavernier, provoked the ire of Stewart who was co-commentating live on Premier Sports [21 September, 19:06].

He told Rory Hamilton: “Philippe Clement is going nuts in front of us, he gets that feeling as well that they need to really drive home the ascendancy. It’s a great chance for Diomande to be able to find the goal.

“And here, it’s a really poor bit of play from James Tavernier in the middle of the park. He’s playing the ball blind, back into an area where he does not know who’s there, clearly.

“It’s one of those situations for Dundee where an opportunity presents itself, and they’re not clinical enough to score the goal.”

Rangers survive errors to secure comfortable win

Rangers have had and will have games when their mistakes will cost them, and will equally have plenty when the opposition does not possess the consistent quality to punish the errors – the latter can apply to Saturday.

Despite that, the Light Blues were rarely out of second gear and had Cyriel Dessers on song with his finishing, while Tavernier himself tucked away a penalty in typical fashion.

Tavernier helped get the ball rolling as he assisted Dessers for an early opener, with Nedim Bajrami handed his first start and marking it with an assist of his own after the break.

Clement steers his team into the last four and while it takes little away from the problems that have enveloped the club both on and off the field, it provides some respite that the team were able to conjure up a comfortable cup victory back at their true home.

The European adventures resume this week with a trip to Malmo in the Europa League opening fixtures – likely to be a more ruthless affair where errors will not go unpunished.
