Ange Postecoglou could look toward some of the younger players at Tottenham to turn the tide.
Despite yet another miserable afternoon in North London following the 4-3 Premier League defeat to Chelsea at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday [8 December], Postecoglou won’t yet be sacked [via The Telegraph, 9 December].
The Australian retains internal support at the club for now. However, that could yet change if Spurs are beaten by Rangers and Southampton this week [via Paul O Keefe, 8 December].
It has already been suggested that Postecoglou needs something “remarkable” to turn things around at Tottenham. Therefore, he could look to achieve that remarkable feat by taking a big gamble and handing a talented 16-year-old the chance to spark some life into his Tottenham team.
Ange Postecoglou to call on Lucá Williams-Barnett to save him at Tottenham?
Spurs appear to be lacking some kind of spark, and Postecoglou could look to change that by handing Williams-Barnett his senior debut for the club in the UEFA Europa League against Rangers at Ibrox on Thursday [12 December].
While it might seem like a big risk, Postecoglou needs something different, and Williams-Barnett has proven he is certainly worthy of at least featuring off the bench for the first team.
Hours before Postecoglou’s side were beaten by Chelsea, Williams-Barnett was lighting up the FA Youth Cup third round as Spurs’ Under-18s beat Middlesbrough’s Under-18s 3-2 at Hotspur Way [8 December].
As per Lilywhite Rose via X [8 December], the 16-year-old embarked on a “sensational” solo run before setting up Reiss Elliott-Parris, who has been making an impact of his own, to equalise for Spurs after the visitors had taken the lead.
Williams-Barnett went on to provide a further two assists as Spurs secured their spot in the fourth round of the FA Youth Cup. As a result, Postecoglou is likely to have taken notice of this performance.
Williams-Barnett, who has already been offered a contract by Tottenham, has been part of first-team matchdays squads this season.
Therefore, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see him involved once again against Rangers, and perhaps even get on the pitch this time and look to ease some pressure on Postecoglou, something he certainly proved he is capable of doing after his magical performance in the FA Youth Cup.
In other Tottenham news, a manager swap with Celtic has been mooted as pressure increases on Postecoglou.
