Dominic Solanke was workmanlike up front for Tottenham in their 2-1 loss to Ipswich on Sunday despite being “guilty” for a disallowed goal.
Speaking on commentary for the USA network (10 November, 3:11pm), Andros Townsend could tell immediately that Solanke knew he’d handled the ball after looking to have halved Ipswich’s 2-0 lead.
While the goal was initially given, VAR intervened to rule it out, and although Rodrigo Bentancur did pull a goal back later in the second half, he and Solanke were two of few players who stood out for Spurs.
Watching a replay of the incident, Townsend said: “He just kicks it into his own hand – his run back (to the halfway line) was the face of a guilty man.”
Dominic Solanke fails to punish Ipswich in Tottenham defeat
Although Spurs were hopeless at the back to prevent a one-two punch from the Tractor Boys late in the first half in North London, Solanke led the frontline superbly in their eventual 2-1 loss.
Producing an expected goals on target (xGOT) rating of 1.01 from his four attempts [FotMob], one of which was blocked, the England striker attained a shot accuracy of 67 per cent, missing one big chance.
Solanke’s link-up play didn’t leave much to be desired either, with six of his 46 touches coming in the Ipswich box and three of 16 completed passes threading the ball into the final third.
Completing 73 per cent of his 22 passes [SofaScore], Solanke found a target with one attempted long ball and was key to stretching the Ipswich defence, winning and conceding two free-kicks apiece.
Of his 13 duels, Solanke won two of three in the air as he contended with Ipswich’s back three, but could only come up with possession in 50 per cent of his 10 battles on the ground [FotMob].
Helping out defensively with five actions in total, Solanke made two ball recoveries, two blocks and a clearance as the game shifted from end to end, with Spurs pushing until the very last for an equaliser.
Postecoglou will undoubtedly be under pressure following back-to-back defeats inside three days, but the Australian knows that he’s got a dependable player both on and off the ball up front in Solanke.
