Sean Dyche could make as many as seven changes to his Everton side as they prepare to face Southampton in the Carabao Cup.
The Blues capitulated a two-goal lead again at Villa Park on Saturday [14 September] in the 3-2 loss to Aston Villa, with Vitali Mykolenko joining the long injury list at Goodison Park.
Everton have lost all four of their Premier League fixtures at the start of the campaign and sit pointless at the foot of the league level on points with their Tuesday [17 September] Carabao Cup opponents.
Dyche will need to navigate the upcoming fixtures with a thin squad and must be ruthless in his team selection, while allowing some of the squad players to step up in light of another abysmal league performance.
Sean Dyche needs to hand opportunities to Everton squad v Southampton
Jordan Pickford has conceded 13 goals in four matches and while his form leaves a lot to be desired, Everton need to win at Goodison Park in midweek and cannot risk dropping the England number one.
Seamus Coleman missed the match on the weekend and with Mykolenko now also a doubt for this next match, Dyche could hand another start to Roman Dixon, with Ashley Young switching to his more natural left-back spot.
There is no time like the present to rid Michael Keane of his first-team duties. The 31-year-old is nowhere near the standard Everton needs to help overturn their defensive woes and Dyche should hand a start to summer signing Jake O’Brien to line up alongside James Tarkowski.
Tim Iroegbunam and Idrissa Gueye were run off the pitch at Villa Park. It’s safe to say the blend of youth and experience has been a failed experiment for the Blues. Orel Mangala looked solid over the weekend and should be given the reigns in midfield alongside James Garner, who should return to his midfield duties after replacing Mykolenko at full-back last time out.
Dwight McNeil looked like one of the only attacking threats for the Toffees against Villa, showing determination to win the ball of former teammate Amadou Onana to score the opening goal. The 24-year-old needs to build on his good form and will be expected to start again with Abdoulaye Doucoure resuming his role behind the striker.
Jesper Lindstrom should be considered for his second start for the Blues ahead of Jack Harrison, another who was off the pace on the weekend.
Despite Dominic Calvert-Lewin scoring the goal that gave his side a two-goal lead on the weekend, the forward has been the subject of intense criticism for his spawned chances. Dyche should take his starting striker out of the firing line and give Beto valuable minutes at Goodison Park.
