Ange Postecoglou has made three changes to his starting XI as Tottenham face Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.
Returning to Premier League action following the international break, Spurs confirmed their side on X (23 November) with James Maddison, Ben Davies and Yves Bissouma all coming in.
Rodrigo Bentancur’s seven-match ban means he’s out of action for the foreseeable future, while Cristian Romero is injured after his woeful display against Ipswich Town last time out.
James Maddison surprise returnee in Tottenham v Manchester City
Davies and Bissouma being back in the side should give Spurs the steel which was sorely lacking against Ipswich, with Bissouma, in particular, a welcome addition in the wake of Bentancur’s enforced absence.
The Mali international completed 86 per cent of his passes and 75 per cent of his duels against Galatasaray in his last start [FotMob], and with Maddison back in midfield, such control on the game may be needed.
Bentancur will undoubtedly be a big miss at both ends, having scored a goal and put in 13 defensive actions against Ipswich [FotMob], including six ball recoveries and winning 69 per cent of his duels.
Kulusevski, who ended the international break with two goals, an assist and seven chances created for Sweden against Azerbaijan, moves from the central midfield possession he’s shone in, to the right wing.
That facilitates a return to the starting XI for Maddison alongside Bissouma and Pape Sarr in the engine room, despite a below-par display against Galatasaray which saw him complete just 25 per cent of his dribbles [FotMob].
Given his lack of success and recent benchings in the Premier League, Maddison starting really is bizarre, but maybe Postecoglou is hoping to spring a surprise.
Kulusevski, Dominic Solanke and captain Heung-min Son therefore lead the line for Spurs, and it remains to be seen how successful this will be against the wounded champions.
In other Tottenham news, Spurs have been handed a boost as Angel Gomes makes his 2025 transfer wishes clear to LOSC Lille.
