Rangers are set to miss out on Nathaniel Adjei after a record-breaking transfer was agreed for the Ibrox-linked defender in France.

Philippe Clement will be desperately keen to bring reinforcements to Ibrox.

Defensive players, in particular, are needed, and Adjei became the latest defender to be linked with a move to the Gers after a report from Sudinfo Sport emerged on Thursday (13 June).

It was claimed that Clement’s side, as well as Anderlecht, were interested in the Hammarby centre-back.

However, no sooner than some hope had emerged, it was taken away from supporters in Glasgow.

That is because Sportbladet have reported (13 June) that Adjei is set to become the most expensive defender in the history of Allsvenskan after a transfer was agreed with FC Lorient.

Adjei spent the second half of last season on loan in France, and Lorient have now exercised their option to buy the 21-year-old.

With a fixed fee of £4.8million, in addition to £1.5million worth of bonuses, the total packed could be set to exceed £6million.

And unfortunately for Clement, this is a deal which Rangers would have struggled to match.

Rangers must go back to the drawing board after missing out on Nathaniel Adjei

With Anderlecht interested in the young centre-back, the Gers would have known they had their work cut out for them.

However, what they might not have expected was for them to be financially outmuscled by a team who were recently relegated to the second division in France.

Adjei’s pre-existing relationship with Lorient would clearly have helped move a deal along, and with the number of players needed at Ibrox, £6million would have been a lot of money for the club to fork out.

As a result, it is back to the drawing board as the Gers continue to search for some much-needed reinforcements ahead of next season.

Rangers Philippe Clement
Philippe Clement will be keen for Rangers to continue spending this summer.

While this will come as a slight blow, there is no reason for Clement to feel too disheartened.

There are still plenty of players available on the market, and more importantly, plenty of time for Rangers to put together a squad which can compete with Celtic next season.

In other Rangers news, one midfielder linked with a move to the club is expected to decide on his future next week.
