Wenham predicts 'Breakthrough' season for 'Standout' Tottenham U21 star

John Wenham believes Damola Ajayi will be a “standout” performer for the Tottenham Under-21s this season.

The owner of the reputable Spurs podcast Lilywhite Rose has suggested this could be a breakthrough year for the 18-year-old.

Ajayi opened the scoring as Spurs’ Under-21s recorded a 2-0 pre-season victory over St. Albans (20 July).

And Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – has backed the young forward to step up to the plate this season.

“I think Ajayi will establish himself as a key player for the Under-21s this season,” Wenham said.

“He played quite a lot last year, but I could see him being a real standout player with some of those other Under-21 stars heading out on loan or playing with the first-team this season.

“Ajayi will benefit from that, and as a result, this could be a real breakthrough year for him.”

Ajayi played most of his football with Spurs’ Under-18s last season.

However, he began to feature more frequently for the Under-21s in the Premier League 2 as the season wore on.

Across his six appearances in the competition, he scored three times and provided three assists, and he will therefore be hoping to build on that during the upcoming campaign.

With several of last season’s top-performing Under-21 stars likely to head out on loan or spend more time with the first team, there should be plenty of chances for Ajayi to establish himself as a regular for the Under-21s.

As a result, this time next year, Spurs could be talking about Ajayi being handed minutes by Ange Postecoglou during pre-season.
