David Edgar has been astonished by Connor Barron’s ability to continue fighting after being heavily criticised at Rangers recently.
The 22-year-old has made 17 appearances in all competitions for the Gers this season, becoming a key figure under Philippe Clement since his arrival from Aberdeen in the summer.
However, given his young age and inexperience, Barron is continuing to learn and develop on the job, leaving him open to criticism from the Ibrox faithful.
Taking to X on Sunday (3 November), Edgar wrote: “By the way, in all the deserved criticism, Connor Barron keeps going regardless and deserves praise. Wish we had more with his spirit.”
Connor Barron continues to carry Rangers midfield
Being the mainstay in the Gers’ midfield, Barron has had to learn to play alongside either Nico Raskin or Mohamed Diomande, with Clement clearly uncertain of what his first-choice partnership is.
The 22-year-old has, probably unfairly, faced the brunt of criticism due to the Light Blues’ current form, especially given his young age and main experience coming in the Scottish Premiership until this season.
His worst performance of the season came in the Europa League during the 4-1 loss to Lyon, gifting the French side a goal and being lucky not to be sent off for a challenge on Corentin Tolisso.
A lot of fingers have been pointed throughout the campaign so far, with Clement deservedly facing pressure at the helm, though he looks to have given himself more time after reaching the League Cup final.
The Gers have a very talented youngster on their hands in Barron, and if they can remain patient with him as he develops, one of the midfield positions will be set for the next few years.
In other Rangers news, Gary Keown has been left baffled as Philippe Clement continually starts one player at Ibrox, “Astonishing”.
