Newcastle United have been inconsistent since the start of the season, with the team yet to hit their groove and find the right notes.
But it can’t be argued that Anthony Gordon is singing and dancing like never before because his performances have been top-notch.
If he isn’t already, Gordon is perhaps Newcastle’s most important player right now, not forgetting that he is reliable and consistent in staying out of the treatment room.
That was proven over the weekend when Newcastle recorded a deserved 1-1 draw against Manchester City at St James’ Park.
Even though Pep Guardiola’s side opened the scoring in the first half, the home team hit back with their usual aggression and front-foot nature.
That’s when Ederson proceeded to foul Gordon in the second half as he tried to knock the ball around the Manchester City keeper when running through one-v-one.
With Alexander Isak absent through injury, Gordon won the penalty and then tucked it away, but it didn’t please everyone.
Chris Sutton slammed the England star’s actions and claimed that it was ‘never a penalty’, as he told BBC 606.
The former striker made it clear that Gordon dived for his penalty and how he is ‘better than that’ when looking back and analysing the players who committed any type of simulation over the past week.
Anthony Gordon slammed for diving during Newcastle’s draw against Manchester City
“Anthony Gordon, Gordon Bennett, I mean, blimey, that was never a penalty,” said Sutton. “He got away with that one. Tucked it in nicely. You are better than that, Anthony.”
Anthony Gordon’s importance growing
Gordon is growing and growing under Eddie Howe and is quickly becoming one of the most feared wingers in the Premier League.
Many are still baffled as to why Gordon didn’t play more for England at Euro 2024 this summer, but with Lee Carsley now in interim charge, those much-deserved starts are being handed out to him.

Another international break is around the corner and you expect Gordon to, not just be selected, but perhaps keep his place in the XI.
Other than Jack Grealish, you can’t see many players pushing the Newcastle man for a starting spot.
