'And a defender or 2' - Alan Myers issues transfer updates as 5 new signings could be in the works

Everton are expected to be at work on bringing in approximately five new signings at various positions, according to Alan Myers.

The Sky Sports journalist responded to a fan via X on 21 July to indicate his expectation that a midfield transfer is likely to be in the works as well as ones for multiple defenders.

That update comes a day after he also stated that a pair of new wingers could be on the cards during the transfer window.

Asked if two wide men could be signed amid reported pursuits of Napoli’s Jesper Lindstrom [Fabrizio Romano, 12 July] and Leeds United’s Willy Gnonto [Sky Sports, 15 July] he replied: “I think so”.

As to whether work was also in progress to sign a midfielder Myers responded: “I would think so, and a defender or two.”

Sean Dyche and Kevin Thelwell at work on Everton signings

Dan Friedkin’s takeover has cast an unwelcome negative shadow of the Toffees’ summer but it is not expected to derail the transfer window or cause immediate serious financial issues [Myers, 19 July].

That crucially means that Jarrad Branthwaite isn’t suddenly at risk of being snatched up by Manchester United for a cut-price fee [Guardian, 19 July] and appears not to have slowed down plans for business in the other direction.

Three signings have been made already in the form of Tim Iroegbunam from Aston Villa, Marseille’s Iliman Ndiaye and a loan return from Leeds for Jack Harrison.

Everton are predicted to be working on multiple new signings.

But Sean Dyche had a thin squad last season and has already seen the likes of Andre Gomes, Lewis Dobbin and Ben Godfrey leave, while Amadou Onana is on the brink of a big-money move to Villa Park.

Everton are now looking to offload Dominic Calvert-Lewin thanks to his contract entering its final year and the takeover collapse appears to have ended hopes of a him signing a new one, according to Paul Joyce in The Times on 19 July, so more reinforcements are needed.

Dele Alli may be brought back as well after his contract expired after an agreement was reached with Tottenham, although a decision has not yet been made [The Athletic, 16 July].

A pair of wingers could yet arrive at Goodison Park as well.

Reports suggest that Lindstrom may be the closest to joining at this stage [Sebastien Vidal, 19 July] although the loan-to-buy arrangement would close the door or any further temporary moves this season.

A striker is seemingly going to be required one way or another so it looks like being a busy final few weeks of the transfer window.

In other Everton news, the Toffees have made an approach to sign a player with an £84million release clause.
