Alan Shearer felt a point was better for Everton in their goalless draw at West Ham United but described the contest as “awful”.

The Toffees were the better side in the opening period of Saturday’s (9 November) contest at the London Stadium but were indebted to a fantastic late save from Jordan Pickford to go home with a point.

Shearer, speaking live on BBC Radio 5 Live (9 November), gave his instant reaction to the bore draw between two out-of-sorts sides.

He said: “It was a better point for Everton given that they were away from home.

“Jordan Pickford made a big save in the last minute or so, but other than that West Ham didn’t really threaten. Overall it was an awful game.”

Everton draw at West Ham gives Sean Dyche some respite

It was not the three points that Everton boss Sean Dyche would have been desperate for amid renewed suggestions he is under some pressure in the Goodison Park hotseat.

A damaging defeat at lowly Southampton last weekend ended a run of five matches unbeaten in the Premier League and meant that another loss here would have raised even more questions about his future on the blue half of Merseyside.

As it is, a hard-fought point to take into the international break is pretty decent and gives Everton something to build on ahead of what is looking an increasingly daunting December.

Everton face Brentford at the end of this month but then have to face off against Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City as part of a hectic period in and around the festive period.

It means Dyche has a little bit of respite ahead of that period, even if it did need a great stop from Pickford to ensure that would be the case.

In other Everton news, Paul Merson dropped a “shocker” verdict after what he witnessed at the London Stadium.
