Rangers selling Jack Butland would be a “big shock” and the club have to weigh up the fact he is “sellable” against how it would look to supporters, Scott Allan has said.

The former Celtic midfielder, a boyhood Gers fan, insists the goalkeeper is a player the club must keep despite the temptation of recouping a sizeable fee, and that offloading Butland would send a harmful message to the fanbase.

Butland is regarded as the most valuable asset in Philippe Clement’s squad, with the manager admitting the club must sell before buying further reinforcements.

“Butland, as a goalkeeper, it’s such an important position in your team,” Allan told presenter Peter Martin on PLZ Soccer’s Football Show [7 August].

“How does that look to the fans when they are trying to build something? It would be a big shock to me.

“That balance is huge between being sellable and being in touch with your fanbase and where the club is going, especially at a Rangers or a Celtic.”

Rangers must keep Butland despite market value

Most at Rangers will certainly echo Allan’s words in that whilst selling Butland would enable Clement to strengthen key areas elsewhere, his exit would weaken the squad.

The England international’s contribution last season – earning him numerous Team of the Year slots – cannot be underestimated, and it is scary to consider how bad it could have got for the Light Blues had they not had the assuring presence of Butland between the sticks.

Despite his performances drawing links back south of the border, only Nottingham Forest have so far enquired about the stopper [Daily Record, 7 August] – an approach swiftly rebuffed.

Calls for a return to the Three Lions squad for Euro 2024 fell on deaf ears with outgoing boss Gareth Southgate, something which may have irked the Gers supporters purely for the fact it may have set alarm bells ringing in the mind of the player.

Butland has three years remaining on his contract which maintains a strong hand for Clement and those at Ibrox – and seems settled in Glasgow.

In other Rangers news, the potential of signing this Manchester United star is discussed.
