Billy Dodds was baffled by Cyriel Dessers’ lack of intent for Rangers in their Scottish Premiership defeat at Kilmarnock on Sunday.
The Light Blues missed the chance to reduce the gap with Celtic and Aberdeen to three points after they lost 1-0 at Rugby Park on 20 October.
However, they were not without chances as underfire right-back James Tavernier played a great ball into the danger area on one occasion in the first half, which Dessers failed to get on the end of.
Dodds was left infuriated after the striker appeared to wait for the ball to reach him instead of making a move himself.
“Brilliant defending [from Robbie Deas] because he’s the one that’s reading the danger”, the ex-Rangers frontman said live on BBC Radio Scotland’s Sportsround.
“Tavernier again in behind, [Matty] Kennedy just switches off, brilliant cross right across the face of the goal, [Robby] McCrorie is beaten, Deas gets himself in a great position.
“One thing I’d say again, Dessers has got to be in there absolutely desperate to score a goal, he is just waiting on it as if to say ‘I’ll wait till the ball comes to me 10 yards out’ instead of attacking it.”
Cyriel Dessers needs to do more for Rangers
Dessers was replaced by Hamza Igamane in the 71st minute of the game and rightly so as he failed to make a significant impact.
This means the Belgian has not found the back of the net for the Glasgow giants in the league since grabbing a brace in their 6-0 win over Ross County on 24 August.
Not scoring a league goal for almost two months is by no means in line with the standards at Ibrox.
With the Gers pushing to close the gap with Celtic and Aberdeen, Dessers undoubtedly needs to do more for Philippe Clement’s side.
Dodds said Dessers looked frustrated and in need of a break after he came off in Rangers’ 2-0 win over St. Johnstone before the international break.
However, the break did not seem to have done the 29-year-old any good as he struggled to impress at Rugby Park.
With Danilo tipped to return to action soon and Igamane waiting for a chance, Dessers could be in line for a spell on the bench.
In other Rangers news, Dodds was also frustrated with Mohamed Diamonde’s first-half showing against Kilmarnock.
