Gareth Law shared that Philippe Clement was not happy with referee Matthew MacDermid’s decision-making against Rangers in the 1-0 win against Dundee.
The Gers returned to winning ways at Ibrox on Saturday [21 December] despite the club SLO warning about the adverse weather conditions pre-kick-off – Vaclav Cerny secured the three points in the Scottish Premiership with his 46th-minute goal.
However, Law shared in his column for the Scottish Sun on Sunday [22 December, pg 63] that Clement was displeased with match officials again in Glasgow less than a week after the Scottish League Cup controversy.
Writing: “All eyes were on Matthew MacDermid after ref’s chief Willie Collum carpeted VAR official Alan Muir last week and admitted Rangers should have had a penalty in the Premier Sports Cup final.
“Perhaps more significantly top ref Nick Walsh was VAR. Walsh confirmed Cerny’s goal should stand then chalked off [Ianis] Hagi’s effort for offside. Philippe Clement wasn’t happy with MacDermid for letting some Dundee challenges go then booking Gers full-back Jefte.”
Rangers caught in officiating outrage again v Dundee
The level of officiating in Scottish football is now under the microscope more than ever after referee chief Willie Collum admitted fault on behalf of the Scottish Football Association for denying the Gers a penalty against Celtic in the League Cup final [15 December].
Rangers supporters held their breath at Ibrox as the VAR officials checked Cerny’s match-winning strike for offside and may have been suffering from de ja vu, but the officials rightfully stuck with the on-field decision.
However, MacDermid is next in line to have his standards scrutinised after some questionable decisions on Saturday.
Dundee were second-best in the tackle more often than not, and despite issuing a yellow card to Jefte for a soft foul, he blew his whistle only three times against the visitors and awarded fouls in their favour 12 times.
Despite what the scoreline suggests, Rangers dominated the contest and should have scored two or three goals more against Dundee, and while analysing every challenge deemed worthy of a foul is a step too far, the referees in Scotland cannot afford another scandal.
While the wound is fresh, every officiating decision from here on out at the Light Blues will be a hot topic of discussion, no matter how counter-productive.
Yes, the decision in the final cost the Gers consecutive League Cup triumphs, but Clement should not allow one match to dictate how the rest of the season plays out and would be far better served letting go of his grudge and focusing on taking football matches out of the hands of the match officials.
