Confirmed: Rangers Women announce new summer signing as 28y/o int'l pens two-year deal

Rangers Women have confirmed their third arrival of the summer having secured the services of Southampton defender Laura Rafferty.

The Light Blues announced in an official statement on Thursday (13 June) that the 28-year-old had put pen to paper on a two-year deal in Glasgow, following the expiry of her contract with the English side.

Rafferty is an experienced international having made more than 20 appearances, occasionally even as captain, for Northern Ireland and Jo Potter believes her experience will bring a lot to the squad at Ibrox.

As quoted by RangersTV (13 June) she said: “I am super excited about signing Laura and she arrives with so much experience.

“I think you can see her CV and the calibre of player that she is and what she can bring to the squad, and from the very first conversation that we had I was impressed with her and how she handles herself.

“I think she is going to bring a lot to the squad, and I am excited to have her in and get going.”

Will Rangers Women beat Celtic to the Scottish Women’s Premier League title?

If the first two additions for Rangers in this summer’s transfer window didn’t get supporters excited, the signing of Rafferty is sure to get fans out of their seats as this is a genuinely impressive addition by the Light Blues.

Not only is the 28-year-old experienced internationally, but she has had a long domestic career which started at Chelsea but has also seen her play for the likes of Brighton, Bristol City and Oxford United before she ended up the books of Southampton.

As the Gers look to close the gap to Celtic at the top of the Premier League table, these are the exact additions they should be prioritising. These are the sort of players who could make a genuine difference in the title race.

Having already secured the signatures of Liv McLoughlin and Leah Eddie, it is clear that Potter and her recruitment team mean business this summer. Hopefully, they will be able to get a few more faces in the door in the coming weeks.

In other Rangers news, Philippe Clement has been told to sell James Tavernier to offer Jack Butland an improved contract at Ibrox
