David Edgar shares 'Catch 22' verdict on Rangers summer transfers

Rangers manager Philippe Clement’s squad overhaul could be limited by the best players being beyond their means, according to David Edgar.

In his Rangers Review column (10 July), Edgar wrote that due to the disparity in finances between the Scottish Premiership and other leagues, the Gers could be priced out of signing their top targets.

Edgar noted that despite this fact, Clement’s rebuild must come to fruition straight away if the club are to make a strong start to the new season with the Belgian having made six new signings so far this summer.

He said: “Signings are often a short-term summer fix but there’s a Catch-22 – the type of signings that would excite the support are beyond the means of Rangers.

“Almost every club in the Premier League will buy a player this summer that costs as much individually as every club in Scotland will buy combined.

“This next month will, for good or worse, shape the whole tone of 24/25.”

New Rangers transfers must hit the ground running next season

A half-dozen new signings with one player returning on loan is a mere drop in the ocean for Clement’s plans at Ibrox this summer, with five veterans departing the club at the end of their previous contracts [Fraser Wilson, 3 June].

Of these six arrivals, only 28-year-old goalkeeper Liam Kelly is over the age of 21, showcasing a clear mindset towards shaping a youthful squad built for the future [Sky Sports, 27 June].

However, Edgar is quite right in his view that the mass incomings this summer have to be an immediate hit, particularly given the Gers come up against Celtic just four games into the new campaign [Kenny Miller, 30 June].

An early Old Firm match, coupled with the fact that the Light Blues may be forced away from Ibrox itself until as late as October, due to delayed redevelopments in the Copland Road Stand [Barry Ferguson, 22 June].

These factors all add to the sense that Clement’s side have to get off to a strong start next season, putting further pressure on his new arrivals to prove they’re more than a “short-term summer fix”.

In other Rangers news, the Gers might have already found their Todd Cantwell replacement.
