Andy Halliday has responded to fans who criticised him for his lack of celebration after scoring for Motherwell against Rangers.
The Gers took on the Steelmen at Hampden Park in the Scottish League Cup semi-final on 3 November, with Philippe Clement’s team completing a second-half comeback to win 2-1.
Halliday gave his former side a real scare when he opened the scoring in the first half, but his diluted reaction to it was focused on more than the goal.
Speaking on Clyde 1 Superboardscore [4 November], the 33-year-old defended his actions: “The last thing I was certainly trying to do was disrespect Motherwell,” he said.
“I’ve heard that comment being branded about over the last couple of days, which to me, is embarrassing.
“I certainly wasn’t apologising for scoring a goal. “
Rangers almost caved in against Motherwell
The Ibrox faithful won’t have any complaints about Halliday showing respect to the opposition fans, who he once called his own.
Rangers are going through a challenging moment right now, and it would’ve been worse for the Scotsman had he seemingly mocked the crowd after beating Jack Butland.
The Bears needed the win, and Clement’s team saved his job by getting a result at Hampden Park, as a loss would’ve made it untenable for the Belgian to remain in the dugout.
Results haven’t been encouraging for the Light Blues in the Scottish Premiership, with the club sitting third in the table, nine points behind Celtic and Aberdeen.
The Scottish League Cup is a chance for Rangers to subdue the noise around the team, but this situation will only continue unless Clement is relieved of his duties.
With the Bears set to take on Celtic in the competition’s final on 15 December, pressure will undoubtedly be high on the Belgian head coach to get his hands on the trophy if he’s still in charge.
In other Rangers news, Vaclav Cerny has been told that he looks like a “little boy” when he plays in the Scottish Premiership
