Everton midfielder Amadou Onana will sign a contract with Aston Villa on Monday 22 July, according to Fabrizio Romano.
The Italian transfer specialist reported [18 July] that the 22-year-old will undergo medical tests at Villa Park on Sunday 21 July, before putting pen to paper in a £50million deal.
Onana’s contract is set to include a sell-on clause and add-ons, leaving just two summers after arriving at Goodison Park on a £33million deal from Lille [BBC Sport].
Amadou Onana closes to Everton exit as Aston Villa contract ready
Many fans will be disappointed to see Onana leave Goodison Park already, having shown great promise under Sean Dyche’s guidance.
He has made 72 appearances in Everton colours since arriving in August 2022, scoring four goals and plying his trade in the middle of the park alongside the likes of James Garner and Idrissa Gana Gueye.
However, the Belgian has often looked out of place on Merseyside and has made his feelings known about an Everton exit this summer, attempting to impress at Euro 2024 [Ben Jacobs].
That seems to have worked, with Villa signing the midfielder after Douglas Luiz’s surprise move to Juventus, but there is definitely a positive side to the transfer for the Toffees.
The profit being made from Onana will mean Jarrad Branthwaite’s exit is much less likely this summer despite strong interest from Manchester United [David Ornstein].
Branthwaite formed a sensational defensive trio with James Tarkowski and Jordan Pickford, teaming up to only concede more Premier League goals than Manchester City, Arsenal and Liverpool last season.
Although fans would have loved to see both remain at Goodison Park this summer, most fans would happily sacrifice Onana if it meant keeping the 22-year-old centre-back.
The funds will also mean that the Toffees can re-enter the transfer market this summer to add some much-needed signings to the squad ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.
In other Everton news, James Tarkowski has made a personal plea to appear on a BBC show.
