Exclusive: Man United open the door to agreeing Fernandes deal

Man United are open to discussing a new contract with captain Bruno Fernandes, sources have told Football Insider.

The 29-year-old has two years left to run on his current deal, plus a further option for a 12-month extension.

Fernandes has been widely linked with Bayern Munich in recent days following the appointment of Vincent Kompany in Bavaria.

But Football Insider revealed on Monday (3 June) that the United skipper is unlikely to seal a “surprise” move away from Old Trafford this summer.

It is believed the United captain wants to stay and sign a new deal – and is keen for the club’s new ownership to match his ambition.

A well-placed source has also told Football Insider that Fernandes, who turns 30 later this year, is acutely aware that his next contract may be his final big deal in Europe.

The Portugal international is already amongst the highest-paid players at Old Trafford, alongside Marcus Rashford and Casemiro.

United are believed to be ready to kick off discussions despite limping to their worst-ever Premier League campaign this year with an eighth-place finish.

Nevertheless, Fernandes was instrumental in the FA Cup win and notched 15 goals and 13 assists in 48 appearances across all competitions this term.

The attacking midfielder joined Man United from Sporting CP in January 2020 for a reported fee of around £47million and penned his last extension in 2022.
