Gabby Agbonlahor was in complete agreement after Ally McCoist named recruitment as one of the big differences between Rangers and Celtic.
Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen made multiple new signings during the summer transfer window, with limited spending, while their Old Firm rivals splashed the cash.
The “gulf” between the two has been discussed at length over the last few seasons, with the topic emerging straight after Clement’s side lost 3-0 at Celtic Park earlier this month.
Speaking via talkSPORT on Thursday (19 September), McCoist said: “That’s one of the big differences in terms of recruitment. Celtic’s recruitment in recent years has been very, very good. Across the city, it’s been nothing like it.”
Agbonlahor instantly replied: “Agreed.”
Rangers transfers slacking as Celtic recruitment leads the way
There is no hiding from the fact Celtic have far more resources to work with when it comes to the transfer windows in Scotland, with the Gers largely working with free agents.
Clement was able to get rid of plenty of deadwood during the summer, though this did not add much funding to the bank, with Sam Lammers’ £2.2million move to FC Twente the highest transfer fee [Daily Record].
In contrast, Brenden Rodgers was able to reinvest the £25million received from Matt O’Riley’s move to Brighton [BBC Sport], signing the likes of Arne Engels, Auston Trusty, Adam Idah and Paulo Bernardo.
Rangers’ hierarchy look like they are attempting to address this gulf in transfer fees, with a “massive” financial deal with Kindred Group being announced at Ibrox, but without investment from elsewhere, it is an extremely difficult task.
Better decisions can certainly be made at Ibrox after Clement was forced to sell many of the duds Michael Beale signed during his short spell in charge, and that would solve some of the recruitment problems straight away.
