'Glasgow Minnows' - Ewan Murray at Ibrox mocks Rangers & Celtic to Lyon after Hearts win

Rangers losing 4-1 at home to Lyon saw them dismissed as “Glasgow minnows” along with Celtic, by Ewan Murray.

The Guardian journalist reacted via X from Ibrox on 3 October as Philippe Clement’s side headed towards a heavy loss, after Brendan Rodgers’ men were smashed 7-1 at Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League on 1 October.

Neither result will have done Scotland’s European coefficient any good, with Hearts’ late 2-1 win at Dinamo Minsk in the Conference League prior to kick-off at Ibrox the only positive on that front.

Murray wrote: “The Glasgow minnows leaving The Jam Tarts to keep the coefficient flag flying yet again this week.”

Rangers shoot themselves in the foot at Ibrox vs Lyon

Murray was in Govan to watch in person as Philippe Clement’s men made it all too easy for their Ligue 1 opponents as they failed to follow up an impressive 2-0 win away to Malmo last week.

His joke is clearly tongue-in-cheek, and glosses over that performance in Sweden, but where the Jambos won in dramatic fashion thanks to Yan Dhanda’s 94th-minute goal the Light Blues were never close once they’d shot themselves in the foot a second time.

Vaclav Cerny followed up his awful miss at Malmo with an even worse one at 0-0 when presented with an open goal, and although Tom Lawrence levelled soon after Lyon took advantage of their let off they were soon given another gift.

Connor Barron’s disastrous blind pass on the half-way line was picked up by Malik Fofana who broke away to feed Alexandre Lacazette to put the French side back into a lead they would only extend.

Rangers and Celtic both lost heavily as Hearts won in Europe this week.

The Lyon pair ended with two each as they and Rayan Cherki made the most of the early charity by Rangers.

In itself the result shouldn’t be a disaster when the visitors are the superior side on paper and spent so much more in the transfer window.

But after impressing against Malmo the manner of the loss will irk Clement, when avoiding errors early could have made it a very different game.

Some of his selections and his substitutions didn’t exactly help and the Belgian will now need to get his players back on track after a heavy defeat once more, having responded to the 3-0 loss in the Old Firm derby with four-straight victories.
