'Crazy' - BBC Sportsound pundit predicts Rangers fine after 'Ridiculous' incident v Lyon

Steven Thompson has suggested that Rangers could be set for a sizable fine after fireworks and flares were set off at Ibrox in the 4-1 defeat against Lyon.

The Gers started well against the French giants on 3 October, with Vaclav Cerny missing a golden chance just a minute after a pause in play due to fan disturbance.

Smoke covered the pitch for a period during which Thompson spoke out about live on BBC Sportsound (3 October, 20:07), booting a potential fine for the club.

He said: “Anything can fall down onto the pitch. I mean it is utterly ridiculous.

“Crazy, you’re talking about UEFA fines for players, you can add another couple of ten thousand to that.”

The Light Blues will be frustrated with the result as much as anything as Lyon took advantage of mistakes and capitalised on them with conviction.

Malick Fofana put the away side ahead early on before Tom Lawrence equalised to score his second goal in a week after his top-class strike against Hibernian.

Philippe Clement’s side weren’t level for long as Alexandre Lacazette grabbed a brace before the interval to take the game away from the Gers.

The second half followed the same pattern as the first as the home side fell to a 4-1 defeat in their own backyard.

As if the result wasn’t frustrating enough, it could get worse for the hierarchy at Ibrox after the use of fireworks and flares inside the stadium.

UEFA could slap Rangers with a hefty fine for this after causing a disturbance and stoppage of the game which may not be looked at favourably by the competition organisers.

It is embarrassing, all around.
