Tottenham star Cristian Romero’s performance against Manchester United led to Chris Sutton calling him an “absolute animal.”
Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live’s Monday Night Club (30 September), Sutton said that as a player, he would not want to come up against Romero in a game due to his aggressive style of play.
Romero and his centre-back partner Micky van de Ven helped Ange Postecoglou’s side keep a clean sheet in their 3-0 victory at Old Trafford on Sunday (29 September), albeit Van de Ven earned more plaudits for his attacking display.
Sutton said: “You wouldn’t want to go up against Romero. He’s super aggressive, isn’t he?
“He is an absolute animal at times, the way that he uses his body and attacks the ball. I think he is phenomenal.”
Cristian Romero as important as Micky van de Ven at Tottenham
Van de Ven was rightfully billed as Spurs’ star man at Old Trafford, having sparked the first goal of a dominant team performance with his surging 70-yard run to tee up Brennan Johnson’s opener.
Romero, however, was just as steely as his team-mate at the back, engaging in seven defensive actions in total, including five recoveries, two interceptions and two clearances [FotMob].
The Argentine also completed a tackle, a block and a headed clearance, having a 100 per cent success rate at the former despite only winning 25 per cent of his four attempted ground duels.
Indeed, Romero averages 1.98 tackles per 90 minutes [FBref], which places him among the top 18 per cent of all centre-backs across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year.
With the ball at his feet, Romero was also rock-solid, completing 90 per cent of his passes and having one attempt at goal – an ambitious volley in the United box which generated just 0.08 xG [FotMob].
Additionally, Romero’s 133 touches were the most of anyone on the pitch, with six of his 107 passes travelling into the final third and five of nine attempted long balls (56 per cent) finding their targets.
Talks of a new contract for the World Cup winner are hardly a surprise after a composed yet typically maverick performance from Romero, whose partnership with Van de Ven is growing stronger by the day.
In other Tottenham news, another Spurs star was singled out by Gary Lineker and Alan Shearer for his performance at Old Trafford.
