'I don't understand' - Wenham 'Massively' frustrated by Tottenham December transfer news

Tottenham striker Richarlison has caused frustration after a reported transfer decision.

As reported by TNT Sports Brazil [12 December], the 27-year-old wishes to remain in North London, and Ange Postecoglou’s side have no plans to loan him out in January.

This is despite the forward’s continuous injury struggles and suggestions that a swap deal could be agreed involving Ivan Toney.

Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham has urged Spurs to move Richarlison on, and even mooted Everton as a potential destination ahead of the January transfer window.

Therefore, Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – was not thrilled by this latest transfer update.

“This is massively frustrating,” Wenham said.

“I don’t understand why Spurs wouldn’t at least let him leave on loan, he never plays anyway. Therefore, by allowing him to leave on loan in January, the situation would be exactly the same as it is now.

“There always seems to be some sort of reason as to why he can’t play, and ideally I’d like to see a new striker brought in this January. That way, Richarlison can then be demoted to third choice and compete with Will Lankshear for those minutes.”

Richarlison to remain at Tottenham beyond January?

Richarlison has never quite been able to make the impact he would have liked since joining Spurs.

Therefore, it seems odd that the North London club wouldn’t be keen to find a solution to move him on in January. It is understandable why the player wants to stay put, as he is playing for a big Premier League club and likely earning good money.

However, from Postecoglou and Spurs’ perspective, it would surely be beneficial to move Richarlison on.

Should Tottenham find a suitable loan destination in January, they would be able to get at least some of Richarlison’s wages off the books, which would be a good thing, because at the moment they are paying money for a player who isn’t ever available.
