Ibrox View: John Bennett shows total disregard to Rangers fans as controversies stack up

John Bennett has offered very little to Rangers supporters with it being nearly two years since he was last heard, in that time there has been plenty of controversy at Ibrox.

The 61-year-old was named as chairman of the Gers in April 2023, taking over from Douglas Park who held the role since 2020.

A vote from within the club was held and Bennett took up the position having joined the board at Ibrox in 2015, before being made deputy chairman five years later.

He was born in Glasgow and was brought up as a Rangers fan and holds a 5.1 per cent equity stake in the club.

With all that being said, Bennett hasn’t been a figure that supporters feel like they can relate to after so long without any correspondence.

It has been nearly two years since Rangers fans have heard from the chairman. It has been exactly 658 days which equates to 21 months or 91 weeks.

Considering the general lack of regular success at Ibrox in that time, you would expect more communication from the hierarchy.

Rangers chairman John Bennett radio silence

The last time Bennett was heard publically was in September 2022 when he spoke out about rumours of potential new investment.

Since then, there has been plenty of activity from the club which has seen them sack two managers while Celtic won three titles on the bounce.

Although things on the pitch haven’t been up to scratch, there have been more frustrating decisions that have affected the club badly.

Stewart Robertson departed Ibrox as CEO after eight years and was replaced by James Bisgrove who was commercial director at the time.

The latter has since left Rangers himself in a move to Saudi Arabia and has now shown interest in various talents like James Tavernier and Todd Cantwell.

The cherry on the icing on the cake has to be the stadium situation which could force fans to travel to Murrayfield for home matches next season.

There has been a general lack of communication from the club on this situation and the buck starts and ends with Bennett.

Rangers supporters will be expecting a lot more from their chairman moving forward but won’t be holding their breath based on the past two years.
