Everton have been dealt a blow to their hopes of signing Hull City’s Jaden Philogene after it was reported Barcelona have submitted an official offer to the Championship club.

Florian Plettenberg posted on X with an update (30 June) that Barcelona’s interest in the 22-year-old is now “concrete” and that they had offered to sign the winger on an initial loan with an obligation to buy.

Philogene, who is under contract at the MKM Stadium until 2026, would then command a fee between roughly £17million and £19.5million upon signing permanently for the Blaugrana next summer.

It remains to be seen if the Toffees, who are one of several Premier League sides interested in the England youth international, will respond to these developments by tabling a bid of their own [Liverpool Echo, 28 June].

Can Everton beat Barcelona to Jaden Philogene transfer?

A player plying his trade in the second tier being sounded out and officially approached by the footballing might of Barcelona shows just how highly-rated Philogene is after his exploits at Hull.

The Toffees, however, are no strangers to shopping in this market, and with the comparative strength of wide stocks between the two clubs, would be a much better move for the 22-year-old to make.

Barcelona’s attacking talent on the flanks includes Ferran Torres, Raphinha, 16-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal and returning starlet Ansu Fati, all of whom are full internationals.

At Goodison Park, by comparison, Dwight McNeil is the only out-and-out winger currently under contract, although Jack Harrison has returned on loan from Leeds United [Fabrizio Romano, 24 June].

The allure of Barcelona and Camp Nou could be too good an offer to turn down for Philogene, but if he really wants the adequate game-time to prove himself at the highest level, a trip across the M62 to Merseyside is surely his best bet.

In other Everton news, Fabrizio Romano has shared where Manchester United stand with regards to their interest in Jarrad Branthwaite.
