Rangers captain James Tavernier is surely edging closer to the Ibrox exit after being left out of the pre-season game against Standard Liege on Wednesday.

The Light Blues had their second pre-season game of the season (10 July) against the Belgian side, with the official club X account posting the starting line-up for the first and second half.

However, conspicuous by his absence in both graphics was the skipper, which will only fuel speculation that he is heading towards a Rangers exit after nine seasons in Glasgow.

The right-back has been heavily linked with a move away from the club, with Saudi Arabia touted as a potentially lucrative destination for the 32-year-old [Daily Record, 24 April].

But it was believed that speculation may have been put to bed after he was spotted on the plane to the Netherlands with the rest of the squad. But Clement has clearly opted to leave him out of the team for the game, despite making 11 changes at half-time.

Summer signing Clinton Nsiala came out at right back in the second half, while youngster Leon King played out of position in the first-half before being replaced.

James Tavernier to leave Rangers

Putting two and two together, it now seems as if Clement is planning for life without his goalscoring skipper and trying his options while a deal comes together behind the scenes.

Should he leave it will split the fan base, with some believing it’s time for him to move on and others believing that he deserves the chance to retire at Ibrox as a legend.

But with Clement running the show now, it seems he would rather cash in and use the money elsewhere. If Tavernier isn’t playing in pre-season, it’s safe to assume he will be on his way out sooner rather than later.

In other Rangers news, a loan-to-buy exit route at Ibrox has emerged for one star this summer.
