Ibrox View: Rangers can't afford to make transfer mistake on 29-y/o forward

Rangers need to avoid bringing in Lawrence Shankland during the January transfer window despite Cyriel Dessers’ final-third form not being up to scratch.

Throughout the entirety of the summer transfer window, Philippe Clement’s men were linked with a move for Hearts talisman Shankland after his stellar campaign in front of goal in 2023-24.

This season, however, things have been quite different. The attacker has still had a fairly regular role within the Jam Tarts’ team as he’s played 18 games across all competitions, but his goalscoring has been way off the mark.

In the 18 games he’s played, the 29-year-old forward has only found the back of the net once but he has chipped in with four assists.

One key area that the Gers need to strengthen in the summer is at number nine due to the inconsistent form of Dessers.

And while it’s likely that a striker will be brought in, it shouldn’t be Shankland.

There’s no denying that Clement needs to find a striker who can become a regular finisher for the Ibrox outfit.

Indeed, Hamza Igamane was brought in over the summer and he also has Danilo at his disposal, but as this season has shown, the duo are rather unreliable.

The Gers are currently third in the Scottish Premiership and find themselves nine points adrift of their title rivals Celtic and Aberdeen.

Many expected Clement’s men to mount a decent title charge this term but instead, it’s been the exact opposite.

Last season’s version of Shankland would have been an ideal candidate to make the switch to Ibrox, but if the Light Blues still choose to go after him in January, it could end up being a rather costly mistake.
