Ibrox View: Rangers chiefs risk ridicule after comments by rival club's CEO

Rangers are looking more desperate by the day in their search for a new CEO after Hearts chief Andrew McKinlay’s latest comments.

McKinlay has ruled himself out of the running to replace James Bisgrove in the post at Ibrox, with the search now becoming far too publicly broadcast after reports of the club targeting the Tynecastle boss as a successor [Daily Record, 23 June].

Bisgrove left Glasgow at the end of last season [Rangers FC official site, 30 May] to take up a job at Saudi Pro League club Al-Qadsiah.

Speaking to Sky Sports News [25 September], McKinlay said: “I can put on record very clearly that I’ve had no conversations with Rangers, and [the club] have had no conversations with me.

“There have been press reports, I have no idea where those press reports have come from. There have been press reports about other individuals who were about to become chief executive and it didn’t come to fruition.

“I have no idea what Rangers plans are for the future. I wish them all the best in their search, but I am absolutely focused on my job with Hearts and will give it my utmost going forward.”

The Gers are now in a vicious limbo in their quest to appoint the right individual for the job, as the club also undergo the process of naming a new permanent chairman to replace John Bennett.

Rangers enveloped in boardroom chaos

For a club crying out for stability in order to properly move forward, Rangers find themselves in a constant frenzy of boardroom comings and goings.

Bisgrove’s departure took the club back a step, and Bennett’s medically-enforced exit sees John Gilligan take interim leadership as chairman.

It does little favour for permanent chiefs to answer to for the likes of Philippe Clement and Nils Koppen, who have had to undertake the mammoth task of rebuilding the squad into an entirely new dimension while all this ensues above them.

The club’s return to Ibrox repairs some of the damage, as does successive wins – but there is a lot more expected on the pitch as the Light Blues gear up for a trip to Scandinavia to kick off the Europa League campaign against Malmo.

McKinlay has exercised clarity to fans of both Hearts and Rangers with his comments, and it remains to be seen who will be appointed in the role at Ibrox, which has frankly been vacated for far too long and leaves the board open to ridicule.

The turbulence, for now, continues.

In other Rangers news, Gilligan opens up on Clement’s transfer budget for January.
