There may only be a matter of days left before the transfer deadline, but Rangers and Philippe Clement still have plenty of work to do at Ibrox.
The Belgian wants to make further additions to his squad before 30 August, but there is an acceptance around the blue side of Glasgow that players have to be sold before new additions are made.
Before the window slams shut, the Gers will be looking to offload a handful of players including Todd Cantwell and Ianis Hagi to try and boost their transfer pot to help fund new arrivals.
Another man who the Light Blues are reportedly ready to sell if their valuation is met is Cyriel Dessers who is understood to have garnered attention from several clubs already this summer [Rangers Review, 3 July].
MLS side Atlanta United were close to agreeing on a fee with Rangers for the Nigerian forward’s services believed to be in the region of £4.6million, but the deal fell through as Dessers couldn’t agree on personal terms [Luca Bendoni, 20 August].
Will Cyriel Dessers exit Rangers after Atlanta United transfer rumours?
Throughout the summer, the striker has repeatedly insisted that he is happy at Ibrox and doesn’t want to leave before the transfer deadline [Rangers Review, 28 July].
While that mentality should be admired, it could cost Rangers millions of pounds and potentially hinder their ability to do business in the final knockings of the summer transfer window.
£4.6million may not be a lot of money for the Light Blues’ primary source of goals, but it would go a long way to helping fund the ongoing rebuild under Clement and could even make one or two targets more attainable in the coming weeks.
With Jack Butland not for sale this summer and talk around James Tavernier’s future now incredibly quiet, Dessers is one of the few sellable assets at Clement’s disposal at this time.
But the attacker seems to be settled in Glasgow and in absolutely no rush to leave. While he is under contract, the Gers are effectively powerless to try and force him out of the club before the end of August.
If he manages to find the net regularly over the course of the season, few supporters will be disappointed to miss out on a few million pounds.
But should he struggle again this season as he did at points last term, there may well be a feeling among some pundits and fans that they would have been better off with the money and a new centre-forward.
