Ibrox View: Some Aberdeen fans in disgraceful chant about new Rangers signing

Rangers star Connor Barron was subject to a disgraceful chant from a minority of Aberdeen supporters recently.

The 21-year-old joined Rangers upon the expiration of his contract with Aberdeen earlier this summer.

It is fair to suggest that this was a transfer which was never going to be received well.

A fierce rivalry exists between Rangers and Aberdeen supporters, and Barron’s move to Ibrox was therefore always going to lead to him burning bridges with his boyhood club.

Add to that the fact that the two clubs have not agreed on a suitable fee for Barron, which could lead to a tribunal to determine the final cost of the midfielder, and this was clearly going to be an unpopular transfer.

However, that does not excuse the sick chants which could recently be heard among a minority of the Dons support.

While Aberdeen were preparing for the 2024/25 season with a Premier Sports Cup clash against Queen of the South on Saturday (13 July), a disgraceful chant was aimed toward Barron (via The Sun, 13 July).

Before the match at Palmerston Park, which ended 3-0 to Aberdeen, several supporters could be heard chanting, “If you see Connor Barron, break his legs. If you see Connor Barron, break his legs.

“If you see Connor Barron, see Connor Barron, see Connor Barron, break his legs.”

It is worth pointing out that this chant was sung by a minority of Aberdeen supporters and is therefore not reflective of the club or fanbase as a whole.

However, for those supporters who were involved in the chanting, it might perhaps be worth taking a long hard look in the mirror.

Football is a fantastic sport which billions of people around the globe have a passion for. Loyal and dedicated supporters is what makes the sport so special.

However, this is a classic example of those supporters stepping over the line. It is okay for Aberdeen fans to be angry at Barron, and perhaps even boo him during matches between Rangers and Aberdeen.

However, to sing this type of song, about a young man just trying to live out his dream, is incredibly poor.

Tension will no doubt be high next time the two teams meet.

However, it can be safely assumed that the Aberdeen players will have no intention whatsoever of fulfilling the wishes of some of their supporters, who should hang their heads in shame.

In other Rangers news, a “major concern” has been shared regarding the Ibrox redevelopment fiasco.
