'I'd be astonished…' - Michael Stewart makes new James Tavernier claim at Rangers

Michael Stewart expects James Tavernier to start for Rangers against Aberdeen in the Scottish Premiership.

The Gers are set to travel to Pittodrie on 30 October after claiming a 2-1 victory over St Mirren to leave them six points behind the Dons.

Tavernier was rested in the latest win, but Stewart admitted he would be astonished if he doesn’t come back in for Philippe Clement on BBC Sportscene.

“I’d be absolutely flabbergasted if Tavernier isn’t playing against Aberdeen,” he said. “It’s a monumental game for Rangers.

“I’d be astonished if Tavernier isn’t playing the game.”

James Tavernier essential for Philippe Clement at Rangers

Tavernier is one of the players Clement has heavily relied on since taking over the team last year after the departure of Michael Beale.

The 32-year-old is one of the most experienced players in the squad, and despite some doubts, has been a reliable servant for the club for years.

After constant starts under Clement and given Rangers still got the three points over St Mirren, it can be classed as the right decision to give him a break.

But considering how monumental the game could’ve been for Clement, whose future at the club is looking in doubt, Tavernier’s absence from the starting line-up is telling.

Neraysho Kasanwirjo started in place of the veteran defender, and the Dutchman put in a decent shift against Stephen Robinson’s tricky side.

The Ibrox faithful won’t give too much thought to the absence of Tavernier against the Saints, but if the captain isn’t trusted for the Aberdeen fixture, then questions will be asked.

In other Rangers news, Stewart couldn’t believe what happened during the St Mirren fixture.
