'It is rubbish' - King slams int'l press amid £50m+ Tottenham transfer speculation

Bryan King has slammed the Argentinian press after recent transfer speculation surrounding Tottenham star Cristian Romero.

The ex-Spurs scout has accused the press in Argentina of attempting “to stir things up”.

As shared by Fabrizio Romano via X (9 October), reports from Argentina suggested there was a £54million release clause in Romero’s Tottenham contract. However, according to the reliable Italian journalist, this is not the case.

And King – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – believes Romero would first need to show signs of improvement before entertaining any moves away from North London.

“I’m not surprised with anything that goes in the press these days,” King said.

“Agents are feeding newspapers lines which are never being checked out properly. That is a problem, because they then become rumours, stories to fill papers.

“It is rubbish, just the Argentinian press trying to stir things up, thinking nobody will read the stories back in England. However, someone will always pick it up.

“It seems as though all of Spurs’ defenders have been linked with moves away at one point or another. They need to think of the club they’re playing for, Tottenham are a top club with a magnificent stadium.

“For now, Romero needs to knuckle down. Looking at his displays recently, nobody would be interested in buying him anyway.”

Whether or not reports over the release clause are true, this will still come as a concern to Tottenham. As King suggested, this could be a cause of agents behind the scenes looking to stir up interest.

Tottenham are no strangers to transfer speculation linking Romero with a move away (via TyC Sports, 9 September).

They will no doubt be keen to keep hold of the defender, despite recent concerns emerging.

However, if they fail to do so, they might already have a potential replacement lined up in the shape of Radu Drăgușin.
