Jamie O’Hara and Jason Cundy have clashed over a new Everton relegation verdict after the Toffees’ draw with Leicester City.
Sean Dyche’s side let another lead slip at the King Power Stadium on Saturday (21 September) but did manage to pick up their first point of the season with a 1-1 draw thanks to Iliman Nidaye’s goal.
While there were plenty of positives to take from the Blues’ performance in difficult conditions, talkSPORT pundit Cundy was quick to suggest that they could well be relegated this season.
Speaking on talkSPORT on Saturday (21 September, 18:39) he said: “There’s a pattern emerging, they can’t hold on to a lead.
“I’ve got to say, if that continues, I like Sean, he’s very open, he’s pragmatic, he’s pretty honest, gives it to you straight down the barrel and he’s open and tells you what we all know.
“But I’ve got to say, mate, if that carries on, they’re going down. If this carries on, they go down. I’m not saying they will.”
O’Hara hit back saying: “You think they’re going down? No, no, they’re not going down.”
Will Everton be relegated after draw v Leicester City?
While the Toffees really should have held on to claim all three points in Saturday afternoon’s clash, there were plenty of signs to suggest that the Blues could well be turning a corner under the management of Dyche.
Had the likes of Jesper Lindstrom and Dominic Calvert-Lewin been a bit more clinical in the final third, or James Tarkowski managed to win the header in the lead-up to the Foxes’ leveller, the feeling around Goodison would be much more positive.
Although the pattern of throwing away leads is a massive concern and must be addressed sooner rather than later, it does feel as though one win may well be enough to settle nerves in and around Dyche’s side.
Next weekend’s clash with Crystal Palace could be massive in the story of Everton’s season.
If they can get all three points in front of the Goodison Park crowd, that could well be enough to finally turn the tide and temper relegation fears.
