Stephen McGinn has admitted the “jury is out” on Robin Propper at Rangers, insisting he hasn’t seen anything to suggest he’s better than Ben Davies.

The 30-year-old centre-back arrived at Ibrox this summer from FC Twente as Philippe Clement looked to bolster his defensive options ahead of his first full season in charge of the Light Blues.

But Go Radio pundit McGinn has been quick to tear into the Dutchman following his poor display against Celtic at Parkhead, admitting he doesn’t seem to be as good as either Davies or Connor Goldson.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (10 October, 39:15) he said: “I think the jury is out on the players that have been brought in

“I’ve been really disappointed in Propper up to this point. I don’t think he’s as good as [Leon] Balogun, I definitely don’t think he’s as good as Connor Goldson.

“I haven’t seen anything to suggest that he’s definitely better than Ben Davies at this point. All he did at Celtic Park was just pass the ball back to John Souttar who was the one who had to take responsibility.”

Robin Propper verdict emerges at Rangers amid Ibrox transfer rumours

It certainly has been far from the perfect start for Propper in Rangers colours. The 30-year-old was very slowly integrated into the fold by Clement this summer, in spite of the fact he had seemingly had a full pre-season with Twente.

While that alone drew some criticism from pundits and supporters alike, the centre-back’s displays, particularly against Celtic have led to many questions over whether he is good enough to play week in and week out at this level.

Even the best players can occasionally struggle to adjust to the Scottish game so there is still a reasonable chance that in time Propper will adapt to the demands of playing in Scotland, just as Cyriel Dessers did last term.

However, it is pretty damning that he is already being compared to the likes of Davies and Goldson who both looked miles off of the pace in a Light Blues shirt last year.

Propper needs to hit the ground running after the International break to get supporters and pundits back onside.
