Everton’s former chief Keith Wyness has claimed Newcastle United can take a “quantum leap on the academy side” if they build a new facility.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – insisted the Magpies need to match the investment made by Everton, Aston Villa and Tottenham at their respective youth bases.
Darsley Park has seen a number of upgrades since the Saudi-backed takeover in 2021 but is still not at the level of some Premier League rivals.
Academy director Steve Harper made a number of key appointments last month as the north-east club continue their push to bring more talent through the ranks.
Sean Longstaff, Lewis Miley, Elliot Anderson and Dan Burn are among the stars to graduate from the Newcastle youth setup.
Newcastle told to build new academy facility
Wyness claimed potential long-term plans could be unveiled within months.
He told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “A new academy approach would be good for Newcastle.
“We may get to the stage where some of these clubs are so rich that money no longer matters, it’s about what you do with the data in the academy.
“That’s what we’ll go back to – excellence of execution.
“Paul Mitchell has got to put that in place.
“Newcastle need a new facility. They’re going to have to build a new one if they’re going to really excel and put together one of the best academies in the UK.
“If they can build something as good as Aston Villa, Everton or Spurs – then they can make a big quantum leap on the academy side.
“Hopefully that would be part of a bigger development on the St James’ Park side as well.
“We could see something on that in the next few months.”
