Aston Villa’s former chief Keith Wyness has insisted West Ham “will be kicking themselves” after failing to push through a move for Jhon Duran.
Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Villa Park between 2016 and 2018 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs –claimed the 20-year-old’s form is “making clubs wish they made a move” in the summer window.
Duran was a target for West Ham and Chelsea in the summer window as Aston Villa were ready to let him depart for the right price.
As revealed by Football Insider on 26 July, the Colombia international even agreed a £90,000-a-week deal with the Irons but they were unwilling to pay his £40million price tag.
He has since scored the winner against West Ham, Leicester and Everton already in the 2024-25 campaign.
The young forward averages a goal every 86.4 minutes in the Premier League as his game time has been limited under Unai Emery.
West Ham and Chelsea will regret Duran blunder, says Wyness
Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I’ve spoken to a number of people about Duran.
“He’s just been inconsistent during his time at the club so far.
“A lot of Villa fans wanted him out the door. But look, he’s shown the talent is there – there’s no doubt about it.
“It’s now about consistency, and to show that he’s got to get the minutes.
“Villa are lucky that between him and Watkins, they’ve got real competition.
“Duran is making clubs wish they made a move in the summer, he was offered to several clubs.
“West Ham will be kicking themselves.
“He’s done himself no harm with the start to this season.”
In other news, West Ham “working hard” to agree centre-back signing.
