Tottenham are expected to take a risk with Ben Davies when it comes to his return from injury.

Ange Postecoglou is trying to navigate an injury crisis so bad that it has sparked an internal investigation behind the scenes in North London.

Spurs have been particularly hit in defence, with centre-back Cristian Romero, who is expected to be out until after the new year [via Gastón Edul, 9 December], Micky van de Ven and Davies all sidelined.

There were initial fears that just like Romero, Davies would also be ruled out until January. However, Postecoglou provided a positive injury update on Friday [13 December], revealing that the Welshman might be able to return before the end of the year [via Spurs’ Official Website].

Spurs fans will of course be understandably concerned about rushing Davies back, after Romero and van de Ven both suffered fresh setbacks in the 4-3 Premier League defeat to Chelsea at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium [8 December], in what was both players first game back from injury.

However, Lilywhite Rose owner John Wenham – speaking exclusively to Tottenham News – has suggested that Postecoglou has no choice but to get Davies back out on the pitch as soon as possible, which he admits could be a risk.

“We just need players back on the pitch,” Wenham said.

“We’re really struggling at the moment, I don’t know how long Radu Drăgușin and Archie Gray can start together at centre-back. We need players back.

“Therefore, that probably means Davies unfortunately will be rushed back, and that is a risk which will need to be taken.”

Ben Davies to be rushed back from injury at Tottenham?

Postecoglou’s job is under threat, with Daniel Levy expected to make a sack decision imminently. Therefore, it is understandable why the Australian would be desperate to get players back out on the pitch.

Rushing Davies back from injury could cause more long-term damage, especially with the player in his thirties. However, it looks as though Postecoglou’s hands are tied.

Therefore, if Davies agrees to play, he is likely to be placed back in the starting lineup a lot earlier than he would have been if the circumstances were different.

In other Tottenham news, Postecoglou’s future is in doubt after what Son Heung-min did recently.
