'Might not stick around' - Keith Jackson moots Clement exit amid clashes with top Rangers attacker

Philippe Clement could leave Rangers without ever having to answer for the limitations of his squad, Keith Jackson has suggested.

The Daily Record journalist wrote for the paper’s website on 22 July that the Ibrox boss has been subject to rumours over the Belgium job and amid growing disquiet about the “decline” of the side he might end up departing.

Jackson criticised Clement for having no obvious style of play and also for failing to get the best out of the “most talented attacking player” he has in Todd Cantwell.

They seen to have some sort of “problem” and the Englishman’s form has dipped since the manager came in with the pair “constantly at loggerheads since the start”, so Cantwell is considered to have no future at Ibrox while Clement is in charge.

Todd Cantwell out in the cold at Rangers since Michael Beale exit

Both Cantwell and Clement had significant impacts on flagging Light Blues seasons when they arrived but it is looking like the influence of each has since wained.

At this stage most observers would expect, and probably prefer, the former Norwich midfielder to be sold so the Belgian boss can reinvest the fees in some of his own signings.

Clement can’t escape criticism for the fact that having done the hard work of reviving the campaign last term he saw the Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup squandered while failing to get a single win over Celtic.

At the same time he can justifiably point to the fact he was picking up the pieces from Michael Beale’s failed transfer rebuild and was endlessly plagued by what Ibrox News pundit Derek Ferguson termed “disturbing” injury issues.

Rangers
Todd Cantwell was a star for Rangers under Michael Beale but has regressed over the past year.

Even now he has seen his own transfer window hampered by needing to sell to buy [Rangers Review, 13 July] and has had the Ibrox mess dumped on him by the hierarchy.

Beale left with few positive points remaining but he did have Cantwell looking like the star man last season and both combined for the only Old Firm victory in two years, albeit in a dead dubber.

Personalities clash and it seems the case with the Englishman and Clement where it didn’t between the midfielder and Beale, but few fans would like to see the latter’s persona return.

It would save a huge amount of money and effort if the manager could find a way to get the best out of Cantwell but if a quick sale can be secured that would be the lesser evil than losing the manager.

In other Rangers news, another senior Ibrox ace has flown out ahead of a possible exit deal being agreed.
