'Oh My God' - Pundit reacts as Serie A visit exposes 'Massive' behind-scenes failings at Rangers

Philippe Clement will be “massive” in bringing Rangers up to speed with support staff and facilities, according to Derek Ferguson.

The Belgian has already confirmed that changes have been made behind the scenes this summer with the medical staff to help address the epidemic if injury issues at Ibrox [Rangers Review, 15 July].

Former Gers midfielder Ferguson believes Scotland is a long way behind other leagues in keeping players at the physical and mental peak after visiting son Lewis in Serie A where he is captain of Bologna.

In his view it will be far more important to get that side of the club improved than the arrival of a new chief executive and is confident that the current manager will be driving positive change.

He spoke exclusively to Ibrox News and said: “We talk about the chief execs and that but this is the important thing, these guys who come to the club that are not just good at their job but can motivate, help, make people feel good, reassure them, they’re so important.

“And the reason that I’m saying this, I got a wee jist of this. I was over in Bologna to watch Lewis and he took us into the rehab centre right next to the training ground, I spoke to a few of the people, saw the facilities, oh my god, we are way behind in Scotland, massively.

“Even speaking to these people they just had something about them, a good feeling, you get a kind of warmth from them. All that matters, and I think Clement will be massive in that.

“He loved that as a player as well. You can see in his stature, he speaks about the fitness, the physicality.

“That’s important to him and I think that’s why he’ll be looking into that and making sure he’s got the best people that he can get that will come to Rangers and make that adjustment and improvement to the players fitness-wise.”

Bologna experience highlights Rangers need to catch up

Rangers Philippe Clement
Philippe Clement hasn’t been overly impressed with everything he has encountered at Rangers.

The Rangers injury list in recent years certainly suggests something has been majorly lacking in Govan regardless of what is in place across the rest of the Scottish Premiership.

Financial differences will play a big part in what is possible between clubs in Scotland and those in the top five European leagues and beyond.

But if Clement can bring the Light Blues up to speed in areas behind the scenes where he has been unimpressed by what he has found then the club should benefit repeatedly for years to come.

But when he needs cash for transfers first and foremost and his squad is looking half-finished it remains to be seen whether he will remain in place long enough to see longer-term improvements through [Keith Jackson, 22 July].

In other Rangers news, the club has now received another transfer offer to sell a prominent first-team player.
