Player on Liverpool's books now in running for prestigious award alongside World Cup winner

Liverpool will be disappointed that the international break has arrived, considering their impressive start to the season.

The Reds have hit the ground running under Arne Slot, winning all three of their opening Premier League games.

Liverpool are also yet to concede, and they hammered Manchester United 3-0 on their own patch before the league ground to a halt.

This time of year also sees the world’s best players make the cut for the most prestigious accolades in world football.

The Ballon d’Or nominees have been revealed, alongside those in the running for the Kopa Trophy, Yashin Trophy, Men’s Coach of the Year and Men’s Club of the Year.

And while no Liverpool players currently at Anfield have made the cut, one who signed for the Reds this summer is in the running for one of the awards.

Liverpool’s Giorgi Mamardashvili in running for Yashin Trophy

The player in question is Giorgi Mamardashvili, who signed a six-year contract with Liverpool this summer as he completed a £29million move from Valencia.

The Georgia international will continue to ply his trade for the Spanish side this season ahead of linking up with the Reds in 2025.

Mamardashvili is in the running for the Yashin Trophy, which recognises the best goalkeeper from the previous season.

The 23-year-old made the cut thanks to his heroics with Georgia, helping his nation to the knockout stages of Euro 2024.

Mamardashvili is in the running alongside Gianluigi Donnarumma, Diogo Costa, Emi Martinez, Unai Simon, Gregor Kobel, Yann Sommer, Andriy Lunin, Mike Maignan and Ronwen Williams.

Liverpool-bound star earns recognition for Georgia heroics

The Liverpool-bound player has a really battle on his hands, considering he’s up against keepers who won the last two Euros, the Copa America, the World Cup and the Champions League.

Nevertheless, it’s great to see Mamardashvili earn recognition for his heroics in his nation’s first ever major tournament, and it also shows that Liverpool have a great eye in terms of scouting.

As per Goal.com, Mamardashvili made 20 saves in the group stages – seven more than any other keeper at the Euros.

When could Mamardashvili be in action next?

Georgia are in Nations League action on Saturday when they host Czechia in Tbilisi, before taking on Albania in Tirana on Tuesday evening.
