Rangers will clear around £75,000-a-week off the wage bill by selling James Tavernier and Connor Goldson, according to David Edgar.

The Heart & Hand Podcast host reacted via X on 22 July as the two senior Ibrox defenders look to be closing in on exits, suggesting it would leave “plenty of scope” for new signings to be made.

Skipper Tavernier looks to be close to move to Trabzonspor [The 4th Official, 20 July] as personal terms have already been agreed with the Turkish club [Yağız Sabuncuoğlu, 18 July].

Meanwhile vice-captain Goldson seems to have just flown to Cyprus where he is suspected to be discussing a departure from Glasgow [This Is Mappa, 21 July].

Philippe Clement set to make room for Rangers recruitment

The debate about whether key men should stay or go appears over after Philippe Clement made his stance clear that everyone bar Jack Butland is available this summer [Rangers Review, 14 July].

If the decision to let the two defenders leave has been made then the faster they are secured moves away the better so the work of replacing them can be undertaken.

Tavernier’s seems to just be waiting on the improved bid from Trabzonspor to arrive [Daily Record, 19 July] to be tied up, but Besiktas hope to hijack the agreement and reunite the right-back with Giovanni van Bronckhorst [Takvim, 20 July].

Goldson’s future is currently less clear as the rumours of a possible Aris Limassol switch are yet to fully develop following links to England and Saudi Arabia.

Rangers would clear a lot of space on the wage bill for signings if the two veterans leave.

Dujon Sterling is the next man up to fill Tavernier’s shoes, although it will be a tough act to follow in many ways.

But Clement is bound to be looking to bring in a commanding senior centre-back if Goldson moves on amid links to former Nottingham Forest man Scott McKenna.

It also looks increasingly clear that he needs a reliable goalscorer so £75,000 off the wage bill would help accommodate that.

And more room to manoeuvre could soon be opened up on top after Ianis Hagi agreed terms on a move to Serie A [SportpeSure, 21 July].

In other Rangers news, Clement has been tipped to change his mind about making a move to sign Lawrence Shankland.
