Rangers manager Philippe Clement may be open to selling Danilo to help fund new transfers ahead of the August deadline, according to Peter Grant.

The Brazilian forward hasn’t played a competitive match for the Light Blues in 2024 because of injury and while he did feature from the bench in pre-season he is yet to leave the bench so far this term.

While most believe Clement has chosen to manage the 25-year-old’s minutes, Go Radio pundit Grant believes the Belgian may already be planning for life without Danilo this season.

Speaking on The Go Radio Football Show (7 August, 8:16) he said: “I thought it at the time, when Rangers signed him they signed three strikers at the one time.

“I thought to myself it was too many. Maybe he [Clement] feels that Danilo might be one of these guys that he feels he can get money back on.

“People say he’s not playing, can he get money back on him? Whether it’s half the money or three-quarters and then I can go and use it on other areas that I need to.

“That may be something he’s looking at. Letting the player know that if I can get money for you, you’re out the door.

“That’s not being disrespectful to the guy, because I haven’t seen enough of him, but that’s one way sometimes you have to work as a manager.”

Will Danilo exit Rangers amid Ibrox transfer rumours?

Cyriel Dessers is quite clearly Clement’s first choice number nine heading into this season and so far the Nigerian has rewarded his manager’s faith with some strong performances and an excellent finish against Dynamo Kyiv.

But it does speak volumes that the Gers boss hasn’t thrown Danilo into the fold in either of the Light Blues opening two fixtures, especially as the team have been pushing for a late on goal in both matches.

Rangers cannot afford to sell Danilo until a new striker arrives on the blue side of Glasgow. Behind Dessers and the Brazilian, the only other alternative is Hamza Igamane who is yet to make his debut following his transfer.

If the Light Blues can agree on a deal for another new forward to make the move to Ibrox, maybe then Clement can look to manoeuvre Danilo out of the door. Until then, however, it seems unlikely the 25-year-old will be going anywhere.
