Report: Newcastle are now ready to bid more than £40m to sign 'one of the best defenders in the world'

Newcastle United haven’t been that busy so far this summer.

The Magpies have sanctioned a few sales in order to comply with Profit and Sustainability rules, but in terms of new arrivals at St James’ Park, things have been rather quiet.

However, that could soon change.

Indeed, Newcastle remain the richest club in the world, and they have serious ambitions to push on and progress under Eddie Howe.

A new centre-back is a priority signing for Newcastle this summer as they look to deal with Sven Botman’s injury issues and Fabian Schar’s advancing years.

Antonio Silva is said to be a player the Magpies are keen on, and now, Newcastle are said to be ready to make an increased offer for the defender.

Newcastle set to improve Antonio Silva offer

According to A Bola, Newcastle United are set to increase their offer for Antonio Silva.

The Magpies are said to have made an opening offer worth €50m (£40m), which was knocked back.

However, Newcastle aren’t giving up there, and it’s said that the Tyneside outfit are ready to up their bid in order to sign ‘one of the best defenders in the world’.

Antonio Silva has bags of potential

Antonio Silva wasn’t at his best during Euro 2024, but make no mistake about it, this is a player with tons of potential.

The Portugal international is just 22 years old, and he’s been one of the better players for Benfica in recent years.

It’s thought that Newcastle’s next bid may well be enough to tempt Benfica into selling the player, and if Eddie Howe’s side can unite a defensive duo of Silva and Botman next season, they should have a solid foundation at the back.

Newcastle could have a very exciting summer ahead of them, and Silva could be an absolute gem of a signing.
