Derek Ferguson expects Aberdeen to take Rangers to a tribunal over the fee for Connor Barron despite a sufficient offer being made.

The former Ibrox midfielder has compared the situation to his own son’s, now-Bologna star Lewis Ferguson, move from Hamilton Academical to Pittodrie in 2018 where the Dons were on the opposite side of the equation and ended up avoiding a “ridiculous” asking price.

According to the Daily Record on 25 June the Light Blues’ offer of £500,000 has been rejected as it is “nowhere near” Aberdeen’s valuation of Barron, 21.

But Ferguson feels the amount is more than fair for a talented player with a long way still to go and has suggested an agreement based on future payments depending on appearances would be the most sensible way to go.

Speaking exclusively to Ibrox News: “Aberdeen are quite lucky. It looks as if, to listen to [Alan] Burrows, that it’s going to go to a tribunal. I don’t think he merits any more than that.

“I’m being honest. The boy’s a good player, he’s still got a lot to prove. I look at my boy’s situation when he left Hamilton Accies, exactly the same thing, going to Aberdeen, Accies at the time came out with this ridiculous figure.

“Now, I’ve got a great relationship with the Hamilton people, but they wanted something like £900,000 for Lewis who’d only played about 15 first-team games and was a promising youngster coming through.

“It went to the tribunal and I think Accies only got about £180,000, something like that, it was quite a small figure.

“I don’t know if they could work it differently. You could see how Connor does over the next two or three years, and if he plays a number of games they could say: ‘Here’s a clause, we could give you an extra £100,000’.

“I don’t know, I’m not a financial wizard, but from the outside looking in I think that [£500,000 offer] was very, very fair to say the least.”

Lewis Ferguson deal cited as Aberdeen set for Rangers tribunal

The Dons may get more than the half-million they have been offered for Barron or they may get less if the matter is taken out of the two clubs’ hands.

That is the amount that they would have been due had the young Scot opted to take one of his offers from England or Italy rather than join Philippe Clement’s squad at Ibrox, so seems a reasonable amount to put on the table.

The younger Ferguson may be one that got away for the Light Blues but could help them reach an agreement here if Aberdeen were to recall how Accies fared when then were on the other side of the table.

In other Rangers news, a senior as is expected to be “on his way” with the club to take an “acceptable” transfer bid.
