Sky Sports: Medical update emerges as Rangers in triple-exit negotiations

Connor Goldson has not had a medical with Aris Limassol but is in talks to leave Rangers for the Cypriot club, Sky Sports reports.

According to an update on the broadcaster’s website on 24 July the tests will not be booked until after the two clubs finalise a deal.

The centre-back had travelled over the weekend to discuss a move but returned to join the Light Blues squad for the preseason game at Birmingham City but did not feature as Philippe Clement confirmed a “concrete” bid had now arrived [Rangers TV, 24 July].

According to Sky Sports the Gers are in three sets of exit talks as discussions with Trabzonspor continue over James Tavernier, with the two defenders to free up over £70,000 on the weekly wage bill.

Sam Lammers is also subject to negotiations over a move to FC Twente “worth over £2million”, although it has been reported to be as much as €5m [£4.2m], according to Tutto Mercato Web’s Andrea Losapio on 24 July.

Philippe Clement set for space to make Rangers signings

Goldson was thought to have had a medical in Cyprus during the previous visit but is surely set for one now after leaving once more.

Clement and Nils Koppen appear to have been faced with a logjam for weeks after a lot of early activity to bring in young prospects.

The manager admitted he has to sell in order to buy [Rangers Review, 13 July] so lining up three prominent departures should be exactly what he needs.

Losing the contributions of Tavernier and Goldson is going to be felt far more keenly than that of Lammers, who had a miserable season last year before exploding back to life on loan at FC Utrecht.

Rangers Philippe Clement
Philippe Clement needs to sell to buy at Rangers so the exits could be crucial.

Clement and the fans will obviously hope that the fees in each case are at the maximum end in order to provide as greater budget for recruits as possible.

But unless reduced fees make it completely impossible to secure replacements there is probably an argument that even smaller deals would be better than nothing at this stage.

In other Rangers news, English clubs have now queued up for a deal to sign a controversial Ibrox ace.
