Dwight McNeil has been hailed as “special” by Glenn Murray after making an impressive start to the season at Everton.
The former Brighton striker believes McNeil has stepped up for the Toffee this term, especially with Dominic Calvert-Lewin failing to live up to expectations.
Impressed with the 25-year-old’s performances, Murray said he has gone under the radar this term.
“I think he’s really gone under the radar, especially when he plays in that 10”, Murray said on BBC Football Focus [23 November, 12:19 pm].
“Even when he’s on the left, I think he delivers a lot of quality, I think the balls in are really, really good.
“But, in that 10, he’s really starting to dictate play a little bit more and score goals.
“For a long time, we’ve looked at Everton and, from an attacking point of view, we’ve looked towards Dominic Calvert-Lewin and he’s not really fulfilled that potential yet, whereas this lad has gone into that 10 space and he’s creating and scoring goals.
“If you can do things like that from 20 yards, it’s pretty special.”
Dwight McNeil impresses for Everton as Dominic Calvert-Lewin disappoints
It is interesting that Murray feels McNeil has gone under the radar this season as no Everton fan is not aware of his importance to the team.
The Englishman is the Merseyside-based club’s leading scorer, having found the back of the net four times across all competitions. Furthermore, only Ashley Young has provided as many assists as him.
McNeil’s absence was felt when Sean Dyche and Co. played out a 0-0 draw with West Ham at the London Stadium on 9 November before the international break.
Calvert-Lewin, meanwhile, has had a disappointing start to the season, netting just twice in the Premier League so far.
The England international is in the final year of his contract at Goodison Park and it seems that has affected his contributions to the team.
There are suggestions that the striker may well put pen to paper on a new contract with the Toffees once The Friedkin Group’s takeover over the club goes through [TEAMtalk].
In other Everton news, the Toffees could use a new manager to tie this indispensable star down to a new deal.
