Stefan Borson: Man City pave way for record-breaking agreement

Manchester City have paved the way for Pep Guardiola to becoming the longest-serving manger in the club’s history after agreeing a new deal.

That is the view of former Man City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who exclusively told Football Insider the Catalan is effectively on a rolling contract with the Premier League champions.

Man City announced on 21 November Guardiola has penned a new two-year deal with the club running until 2027 in a move first revealed by Football Insider earlier this month.

The agreement ensures the 53-year-old is tied for up to 11 years at to the Etihad, where he’s won 18 trophies since joining the club in 2016.

Man City are, however, going through a tough spell on the pitch after their 4-0 defeat against Tottenham meant they have now lost five games in a row.

It comes after they have suffered injuries to several key players this season, with Rodri ruled out for the rest of the campaign with a knee injury.

Pep Guardiola to oversee Man City rebuild after agreeing new deal

Borson suggested Guardiola will now oversee a rebuild of his side after signing a new contract and could eclipse the club-record 14-year reign of Wilf Wild.

He told Football Insider: “It doesn’t look like his key driver was financial from the little quotes that we got.

“I think it was much more about football for him. If I was in an executive role at City, I would see him as a key executive and I would be thinking about remuneration in that way.

“That goes with not just salary but also potential equity interests of that sort of thing in the way that a private equity or venture capitalist owner would look at a senior manager.

“He’s very handsomely rewarded salary-wise. But I think for City in terms of the value the organisation gets from having Pep there, it’s all good value.

“I still think that he can carry on for as long as he wants and it’s not dependent on winning trophies over the next two years. I think he’s obviously proved his capability.

“The question now is whether they can deal with the Rodri issue in terms of his injury and also combining that with the transition to a new era of player, with some of those very big players of the past moving on. That will be the big challenge.

“But clearly, Guardiola will provide value in that regard and I think that’s why City were prepared to really go on whatever basis Guardiola wants.

“That’s why we started hearing rumours it was going to be just a one-year extension with a one-year option, and then it turns out that it’s a two-year deal.

“I think effectively Guardiola is on a rolling contract now and he effectively leaves when he wants to leave.

“If he wants to carry on after the two years, then I think that will happen.”
