Rangers Review’s Stevie Clifford has leapt to the defence of Mohamed Diomande following recent criticism of the Gers midfielder but did note one area he can improve.

In a clip shared on X [9 August] from the most recent episode of the show, Clifford describes Diomande as a “cracking player” who critics should “watch properly”.

Fans have recently thrown jibes Diomande’s way about his ability in possession, tendency to give away fouls and mentality in big games.

Clifford believes none of the difficulties surrounding the Light Blues are the Ivorian’s fault, following the activation of the club’s obligation to buy him after his loan from Nordsjaelland, though he did concede he could be cannier in possession.

“People will say things about Diomande, about [James] Tavernier, about [Philippe] Clement, and it almost becomes truth,” Clifford explained to Derek Clark.

“I think those criticising him should watch him properly and see what he really does for Rangers – I think he’s a cracking player.

“I like to see him dictate the ball a wee bit more, but that’s it. I think there’s skill there, and he’s got a terrific footballing ability.”

Rangers need Diomande at his best this season

Diomande is a player who at 22 has time on his side; the problem is, Rangers and Clement don’t.

There were mixed reviews on the goalless draw at Hearts and the late draw against Dynamo Kyiv which have kicked off the 2024-25 season, but there can be no room for complacency when the team begins its portion of the campaign at Hampden Park.

The Gers come up against a depleted Motherwell squad – as described by their boss Stuart Kettlewell – and must be ruthless in collecting the three points.

Diomande is a gifted midfield player, and was signed for over £4m on a permanent switch as the club honoured their obligation to buy from his Danish former employers.

He will in time do that fee justice – it’s a hefty chunk to shell out for a player in Scotland – but at times displays inconsistency and needs experienced midfield help alongside him.

Nils Koppen and Clement have so far predominantly replaced experience with youth this summer, which will force Diomande to take on more seniority than he has been used to in what promises to be a huge season for him as an individual.
